iEmulator frequently asked questions (June 26, 2006)

iEmulator is now available for immediate download by clicking here.

Could you please define "high performance"? We've all heard that one before.
Of course, emulated code will always run slower than native code, all other things being equal. On a PowerBook G4 (15", 1.5GHz) we've seen performance benchmarks ranging from a 200MHz Pentium (running graphics-heavy code on Windows XP) and a 550MHz Pentium (running DOS). On a PowerMac G5, we've seen integer performance benchmark as high as 1.4GHz and floating point performance hit as fast as a 3.2GHz Pentium! You can see the G5 DOS benchmark results by Clicking Here. Intel-based Macs (like the MacBook, MacBook Pro, Intel iMac and Intel Mac mini) are even faster!

Will iEmulator run on my Mac?
If your Mac is running OS X 10.3 or later (including 10.4, "Tiger", 10.5, "Leopard" and 10.6, "Snow Leopard"), iEmulator will run. iEmulator runs on iMacs, eMacs, PowerBooks, iBooks, MacBooks, MacBook Pros, PowerMacs, Mac minis and any other G3, G4, G5 PowerPC-based Mac or any Intel-based Macintosh computer that is able to run OS X 10.3 or 10.4, including Macs that have been modified with third-party G3 or G4 processor upgrades!

The G4 numbers are lower than what another commercial emulator is telling me; it says my emulated PC is running at over 1 GHz!
The numbers we quote (200-550MHz on a 1.5GHz PowerBook) are actual program execution speeds. The 1+ GHz numbers quoted by other emulators are just what the emulated "hardware" is telling Windows (it's the number you see when you right-click on "My Computer" in Windows and select "Properties"; it means nothing as far as real-world performance). We're confident that iEmulator is one of the fastest, most efficient PC Emulators for Mac OS X available.

Is iEmulator based on the BOCHS emulator?
No! BOCHS is a fantastic, flexible effort, but we found it to be too slow to be "day-to-day usable" on the majority of hardware we tested with. In all of the tests we've tried, our solution, based on the powerful QEMU codebase and Q front-end, runs significantly quicker! Please note that QEMU is a trademark of Fabrice Bellard, Q is a trademark of Mike Kronenberg and cordney* and the source code for the Open-Source components of iEmulator are available here.

What are the system requirements for iEmulator 1.7.9?
You need a Macintosh with a G3, G4, G5 or Intel CPU running Mac OS X 10.3.0 ("Panther") or later.

Does iEmulator 1.7.9 run on OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or OS X 10.5 (Leopard)?
Absolutely. iEmulator has been fully tested on OS X 10.4 Tiger, OS X 10.5 Leopard and OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

What will I get if I purchase iEmulator?
You'll get everything you need to get started running PC software on your OS X-based Macintosh: the iEmulator application, comprehensive documentation and a DOS operating system, which allows you to run DOS-based applications. If you wish to run Windows applications you'll need to provide your own copy of Windows.

I've never heard of you before! What's with "version 1.7.9"? Shouldn't this be "version 1.0"?
Good question! Versions 1.0 and 1.5 were never released into the wild, and were only used for testing, both internally and by some close associates. 1.6 was released at the end of November, 2004. 1.7 was the second public release, and was available in January 2005. iEmulator 1.7.5 was released in March of 2005, 1.7.6 at the end of May, 1.7.7 at the beginning of October and 1.7.8 on November 21st, 2005. iEmulator 1.7.9, the current version, was released on June 26, 2006.

Can I see iEmulator in action before I purchase it?
Absolutely! We've put together a couple of video clips showing just how fast iEmulator is capable of running both DOS and Windows (including MS Office XP). You can view them by clicking here. Please note that these videos were made on PowerPC-based hardware; Intel-based Macs will perform even faster than what is demonstrated in the video!

iEmulator sounds great! How much is it, though? I can't afford $200+ for competing products.
iEmulator is the most cost-effective PC emulator for the Macintosh platform at only $23.95 US, which includes the iEmulator software, comprehensive documentation and email support!

When can I purchase iEmulator?
